100 Days

The tense days of the Falklands War comes alive in this thrilling novel, based on the author's experiences as a sailor in the Royal Navy.

100 Days relates what a group of British sailors, a Harrier pilot, and a Parachute regiment soldier faced in the Falklands. It also tells about the families they left behind. As the operation to retake the islands unfolds, follow the war alongside those who fought.

HMS Fearless suffered five days of air attacks in San Carlos water, known as "bomb alley." Peterborough was attacked as it protected the landing area, only to sink in the South Atlantic. The Harrier pilot is shot down. He finds himself in the middle of a battle and is befriended by a soldier who is later shot and killed right next to him.

After the war, the key characters struggle to reconcile their survival while their comrades died. The character Chris Carpenter on HMS Fearless is autobiographical.

First-time author Steve Carter served in the Royal Navy from 1977 to 1990, reaching the rank of chief petty officer. He served on four ships, including HMS Devonshire in 1978, HMS Sheffield from 1979 to 1981, HMS Fearless from 1981 to 1983, and HMS Nottingham in 1989. In April 1982, the author was a 22-year-old, responsible for the maintenance of the radio and cryptographic equipment in the main communications office of HMS Fearless. Though a novel, 100 Days is essentially an autobiography with a novel written around it, telling the story of the Falklands War through the eyes of the young men who fought it.
