Excerpt from 14th Annual Report, National Institutes of Health, Program in Biomedical and Behavioral Nutrition Research and Training: Fiscal Year 1990Nutrition research represents a cross-cutting scientific endeavor that seeks to assess the consequences of food or nutrient intake in the intact organism and the metabolic and behavioral mechanisms involved. As such, it encompasses studies at the cellular and subcellular levels, elucidation of the metabolic function of nutrients in both animals and humans, examination of genetic-nutrient environmental interactions, and studies of the role of diet in the maintenance of health and the prevention of disease in humans, including clinical trials, epidemiological studies, metabolic studies, surveillance, and nutritional status monitoring studies. All of these are activities of the nih Program in Biomedical and Behavioral Nutrition Research and Training.Over the past 14 years, this report, published annually since 1977, has emphasized the coordination of nutrition research at nih, the activities of the nih Nutrition Coordinating Committee MCC), the highlights of the nutrition research program and associated program development, and the fiscal year obligations in nutrition research and training.
