In 1687 Jacques de Bourdeux, a Huguenot refugee from France, settled in Charleston with his family. In 1770 his grandson, Daniel Bourdeaux, married Martha "Patti" Smith, great-granddaughter of Thomas Smith, the colonial governor of the Carolinas in 1694.
