»Carmen«, am 3. März 1875 in der Opéra Comique bei der Uraufführung durchgefallen, gehört heute zu den beliebtesten und meistgespielten Stücken des internationalen Musiktheaters. Das Libretto wird hier in einer zweisprachigen Ausgabe vorgelegt, die sowohl die (dem Gesetz der Opéra Comique entsprechenden) gesprochenen Dialoge als auch die nachträglich von Bizets Freund Ernest Guiraud komponierten Rezitative enthält.

Ziel dieser Neuausgabe der Carmen ist die Vorlage eines korrekten Werktextes, der jener Fassung entspricht, welche die Oper im Zuge ihrer ersten szenischen Erprobung gefunden hat, und die als einzige von den Autoren, dem Komponisten wie den Librettisten, sanktioniert wurde. Dieser Text ist dokumentiert in den handschriftlichen Quellen und vor allem in den unter Aufsicht der Autoren erschienenen gedruckten Ausgaben: Libretto und Klavierauszug.
