For 2 years in the early 1980s Monica Connell lived as a paying guest of Kalchu ans Chola in the Nepalese Himalayan village of Talphi. Gradually she was accepted as a member of the family, sharing its joys, sorrows and immediate experiences.

As a child, growing up in Belfast in the 1950's, Monica Connell spent the summer holidays in Donegal. In the 1990's, by now an anthropologist and author, she returned to Donegal with her husband. Gathering Carrageen is the story of that return.
