Cleft lip repair is normally carried out on babies at 10 to 12 weeks, but the Stoke Mandeville Hospital has done surgery on the first 48 hours after birth since the 1970s. The author here analyzes all the arguments for and against this procedure and examines the results of surgery in the newborn.
