This book, first published in 1917, investigates the rites and beliefs of people who had remained in a `primitive¿ state of culture throughout the ages. Special attention was paid to the ritual and mythology of the Aborigines of Australia, in what was then some of the first studies of their beliefs.

Edwin Oliver James (1888-1972) was an anthropologist in the field of comparative religion and editor of the journal Folk-Lore. In The Origins of Religion, James evaluates "the higher developments of religious thought and practice" in light of "the more rudimentary spiritual strivings of the human soul.
