During 1928-37 Soviet economic planners decided to deemphasize the industrial growth of the Ukraine and other western regions in favor of the all-out industrialization of a few underdeveloped areas in the east beyond the Ural Mountains. The repercussions of this decision have strongly influenced the course of economic development in individual regions and in the USSR as a whole since that time.

This volume contains the papers presented at the Third Quinquennial Conference on Ukrainian Economics, held at the Ukrainian Research Institute, Harvard University, in 1985. The first two conferences and their proceedings were devoted to the Ukraine's current economic conditions and to selected contributions of its scholars to economics. Containing the papers presented at the Fourth Quinquennial Conference on Ukrainian economics at the Ukrainian Research Institute of Harvard University in September 1990, this volume focuses on the Ukrainian economy during the past decade. Statistical data and detailed maps support the text.
