Painting on the Left follows the development of public mural painting in San Francisco from 1915 (the year of the Panama Pacific International Exposition) to the mid-1940s, when Anton Refregier painted the controversial murals at Rincon Annex. The heart of the book is the discussion of three murals by Diego Rivera.
