The book offers a new theory for cinematic metaphor as performative action grounded in the dynamics of viewers' embodied intersubjective experiences with film. Metaphor in audiovisual media shares this basic setting with metaphor in multimodal interaction. The theory is illustrated with a rich variety of case studies from a broad range of media formats and face-to-face interaction including Hollywood movies, TV news, and dance lessons.
