Am 6. Dezember 1801 brach Johann Gottfried Seume in Grimma bei Leipzig zu einer Wanderung nach Syrakus auf. Am 1. April 1802 erreichte er sein Ziel, im August 1802 war er wieder zu Hause. Mit seinem Reisbericht über den Spaziergang nach Syracus wurde er über Nacht berühmt.

Gehen ist die intensivste Form der Welterkundung, und der Schriftsteller Johann Gottfried Seume war der ausdauerndste Fußgänger unter den deutschen Bildungsreisenden: Rund siebentausend Kilometer legte er im Jahr 1802 zurück, um das Sehnsuchtsland Italien zu durchstreifen.
