Adalbert Stifter wurde am 23. Oktober 1805 in Oberplan (Böhmerwald) geboren. Er kam als Sohn eines Leinewebers und Flachshändlers aus einfachen Verhältnissen. Da der Vater tödlich verunglückte, als Stifter zwölf Jahre alt war, kümmerten sich die Großeltern um die Erziehung des Kindes.
