Originally published in 1968. This book comprises a cross-section of rescued melodies dating back to medieval days and up to the Victorian early ballads. It describes individual folk singers in Somerset in great detail as personal accounts and documents their lyrics and their tunes, which are all together at the end of the volume.

This volume is a collection of a number of country folk tales. The tales reveal a good deal of fairy lore, some tree lore, including ghostly trees like crooker, the uncanny black dog makes his appearance in more than one tale and also include several long fireside tales.
