From the eighteenth to the twentieth centuries, Naqshbandi-Mujaddidi Sufis inspired reformist movements and articulated responses to the fracturing of Muslim political power. They fostered a "hidden caliphate? that sustained cohesion from Afghanistan to Siberia and China.
