Spectacular exchange ceremonies involving hundreds of dancers festooned with elaborate body adornments including highly prized bird of paradise plumes and the revered kina, or pearlshell is something for which the peoples of the New Guinea highlands are renowned. In this book, the author assembles a collection of body adornments from New Guinea.

Surveying the art of five decades, from 1867 to 1917, this publication follows the broad and diverse ways that artists and their public, little by little, learnt to see and to judge works of art abstractly. It argues that abstraction arose directly from a tradition of speculation about the nature of art and of aesthetic experience.

Focuses on some of the great aesthetic innovations that were made by artists throughout Germany in painting, sculpture, graphic art, photography, film and the decorative arts during the years from 1910 to 1937.

Cara Pinchbeck is a member of the Kamilaroi community. She has been curator of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art at the Art Gallery of New South Wales since 2007. Lindy Allen is senior curator, Anthropology (Northern Australia) in the Humanities Department at Museum Victoria. Louise Hamby is a research fellow in the Department of Archaeology and Anthropology, at the Australian National University.
