The Barnes family have found themselves in a tough situation as Mr. Barnes has lost his job. In 1940's London time are difficult. William, age 9, is trying to adjust to his family's new circumstances he begins to act out. William gets to a point where he actually wants coal for Christmas. As he works to figure out how to get it, he also learns about charity and the Christmas spirit.
