Daniel O'Connell was one of Ireland's most significant politicians. In 1840 he visited Belfast and while there was challenged to debate the Repeal of the Act of Union. He refused, partly for fear of violence. The visit produced extensive rioting, his meetings were cancelled, and he had to travel in disguise.
