Excerpt from A Bibliographical Guide to the Gaskell Collection in the Moss Side Library
The Gaskell Collection in the Moss Side Library illustrates the life and work of Mrs. Elizabeth Cleghom Gaskell and her husband, the Rev. William Gaskell, m.a., two of the most distinguished people associated with the neigh bourhood of Moss Side. Originated by Mr. \villiam E. A. Axon, first Chairman of the Moss Side Library Committee, it has received many benefactions from Miss Meta Gaskell and Miss Julia Gaskell, the daughters of Mr. And Mrs. Gaskell. Since the incorporation of Moss Side with Manchester, the Library has formed one of the City of Manchester Public Libraries, and the Collection has been much extended. In commemoration of the centenary of Mrs. Gaskell, in 1910, there was a Gaskell Exhibition at the Reference Library, many of the treasures of the collection being shown.
