Excerpt from A Directory of Bookplate Artists: With Notes Concerning Their Work

The enthusiasm with which the first edition of the Directory of Bookplate Artists was received, and the ensuing rapid exhaustion of the edition, justified the opinion that the project would meet a well-defined need in the bookplate world.

A number of suggestions have been offered for illustrating the Directory, most of which resolve themselves into proposals for printing one example of each artist's work. However, it is thought that this method would be inadequate because a single example of an artist's work is rarely representative of his talents, and it is now impracticable to extend the work to great length.

Several artists complained that some collectors were treating the Directory as a mere exchange list and not even observing the ordinary courtesies of exchanging, such as first writing a letter to determine whether or not the artist cared to exchange, asking for his definite needs in case he should be willing to exchange, etc.
