Excerpt from A Five Years' Residence in Buenos Ayres: During the Years 1820 to 1825, Containing Remarks on the Country and Inhabitants, And a Visit to Colonia Del Sacramento

The annexed sketches were written solely for the perusal of the author's friends in England, and in submitting them to the public He feels considerable apprehension aware that he must encounter the censures and criticisms of the man, of business and other, who in a work professing to be a descriptive detail, expect to find minute accounts of soil, mineralogy, products, and all the et cetera of such works. But independent of the author's inability to write on subjects like these he has not had the opportunity not having been six miles from the city of Buenos Ayres during his resident in the country, with the exception of a short visit to Colonia and a residence of one day in Montevideo. Therefore, trifling as these hastily written sketches may appear, and in spite of their many inaccuracies, many of them arising from the author's not having been able to superintend the publication in person, he trusts they will be viewed with lenity and not visited by a criticism too severe.
