On the other fide, the Irith having in all ages, even to this day, ufed them, do pretend that they were originally In'fh letters, and fay, that feveral reli gions men of their nation having been femo preach the gofpel to the Saxons, taught them to write at the fame time but no per. Fon of either nation has ever mentioned that the ancient Britons alfo ufed the fame letters till very lately. (mr. Humphry Wan ley) the author of the catalogue of Northern hooks, in his Latin preface, after having exchanged form letters with me on this fubjeét, and been informed that I had faid we had a better right to thofe letters than either the Saxons or Irilh, that he has written thereon is, That the Saxons neither received thefe let ters from the Irilh nor the ancient Britons, but from Auguitine the monk which is as much as to fay, that the ancient Britons and Irith learned them of the Saxons.
