Excerpt from A Historical French Grammar, Vol. 2: Morphology, or the Study of the Grammatical FormsThe Modern language, ' written with a capital, must be taken as a technical expression for French from the 17th century down to our time. Occasionally the French of the 17th century is contrasted, however, in the original with the modern, i. E. Contemporary language, and in this case 'modern' has been written without a capital. In spite of apparent complexity in this convention, confusion is hardly to be feared in any instance.
