Some knowledge of Japanese is indispensable to the traditional karateka. This volume is divided into sections covering general terms, stances, striking techniques, kicking techniques, defensive techniques, etiquette and instructions, parts of the body, and counting. The "general terms" section includes quite a few words and expressions associated with arts other than karate but which have a general relevance across a range of martial arts. We have provided also, as a matter of additional interest, a few short biographies of some distinguished founders of karate ryu.
