A Microbial Enzyme-Xylanase

Lignocellulosic biomass includes cellulose (35-50%), hemicellulose (20-35%), and lignin (10-25%). Xylan is the major plant hemicellulose, which constitute 20-40% of total biomass (Saha B. 2003, Wong KK. 1988). The enzymatic hydrolysis of xylan requires the cumulative actions of endo-beta-1, 4-xylanase (EC 3.2.1.8), beta-xylosidase (EC 3.2.1.37), and a series of enzymes that degrade side chain groups. Nowadays industrial waste materials have become a global challenge and remained as center of attraction since they create pollution, unnecessarily occupy space and requires high cost for proper management. But the production of value added products, such as bioethanol and oligosaccharides offers an attractive solution. Here, I describe the isolation, identification, production, and biochemical characterization of a potent xylanase producer- Streptomyces sp. CS428. Further purification by single-step column chromatography was also performed. Apart from this, I have compared CS428 with other commercially available xylanase from Thermomyces lanuginosus, and endo-1, 4-beta-xylanase from Trichoderma longibrachiatum in quest of potential bio industrial applications
