Abstract. A numerical procedure is introduced to solve the one-dimensional equations of gas dynamics for a cylindrically or spherically symmetric flow. The method consists of a judicious combination of Glimm smethod and operator splitting. The method is applied to the problem of a converging cylindrical shock.
