A Popular History of England

Excerpt from A Popular History of England: From the Earliest Times to the Accession of Victoria, Five Volumes Bound in Three, Vols. III. And IVThe Upper House received this message with joy. Even among the Lords who belonged to the popular party, many dreaded the struggle which was just commencing, and which they would gladly have seen ended. They immediately pro posed for the assent of the Commons a cordial expression of thanks to the king. But the Lower House had no confidence in the royal promises, it demanded that the king should first consent to consign the command of the Tower, the strongholds, and the militia, to men enjoying the confidence of Parliament. The Lords rejected this amendment, but thirty-two votes among them had supported it, and the Commons presented their peti tion alone. AS regards the Tower and the fortresses, the king absolutely refused, in respect to the soldiery, his reply was vague and evasive, he wished to gain time.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
