Meg Fraser, widowed in the early weeks of WWI, has vowed to preserve the family farm for her son, Will, and daughter, Isobel, but has made a dangerous enemy in neighbour Dod Grant. He makes it plain that he can ruin the business if she continues to oppose him. Later, when Dod is found dead, Will is accused of the murder.
