A Treatise on Glaucoma (Classic Reprint)

Excerpt from A Treatise on Glaucoma

I must commence with an apology for the long delay in bringing out a second edition. It has been due to the fact that I am obliged to do my literary work in my spare time, and that the amount of labour involved in following up the many additions to the literature of Glaucoma during the past four years has been very great.

I have altered the title, for I have given my book a more ambitious scope than before. I have felt it was more than a textbook that was wanted. There are so many questions in connection with glaucoma which are still unanswered, and there is still so very much work to be done, that I have felt that the aim to be kept before me was the writing of a book which would enable a reader to recognise the stage to which any part of the subject has been brought by the work of those who have preceded him. It is my hope that, in this way, I shall be able to be of assistance to those who desire to advance our knowledge by a further study of the many problems still awaiting solution, and thus shall, even in some small measure, succeed in stimulating research. I am convinced that the man or the profession, that rests content with the knowledge bequeathed by the past, is bound to move backwards instead of forwards. The opportunities for research in connection with glaucoma arc immense, and I would commend this subject to all who have the privilege to be teachers in medical schools. It is for them to inspire their students and to direct their energies along such lines.
