Confined entirely to the department of Calvados. The work, however, is very interesting, and gives an elaborate account of Caen, Bayeux and its tapestry, Falaise, Lisieux, and one or two other places. The reverend writer also has entered with spirit into the genius loci, having collected from historical sources all about the life and times of the Conqueror, which, read in connection with the places visited, always proves instructive, however old and hackneyed the information may be. The other work to which I allude is Life in Normandy, an anonymous book, in two goodly tomes, but which it has transpired is written by Walter Campbell, of lslay, a deceased Scotch gentle man of great estate and wealth, but becoming impoverished, chie¿y through the liberal manner in which he endeavoured to alleviate the dis tresses of his poor neighbours during a period of calamity, he became an outcast from his country, and settled in Normandy, at Avranches. Here Mr. Campbell dwelt during the remainder of his life, and carried with him to the new country those sporting tastes which he had been accustomed to cultivate in his native land.
