Excerpt from Alpha Tau Omega Palm, Vol. 28: March, 1908One of the distinguished lawyers and public men of Eastern North Carolina is Donnell Gilliam, now a resident of Tarboro, who was born at Plymouth on the 3ist of October, 1861.His father, Hon. Henry Augustus Gilliam, served as a major in the 7th North Carolina Regiment in the war between the States, winning honors in the defence of Hatteras Inlet and Roanoke Island. Some years after the restoration of peace he removed to Raleigh where he soon established himself as one of the leading lawyers at the capitol. Being a man of great mental vigor, and of unusual attainment and accomplishment, he was especially attractive to the younger members of the bar, who were always fond of gathering around him and to whom he was ever courteous and kind. For a time he served as Judge of the Superior Court for the Metropolitan District, and he wore the ermine with grace and dignity. Indeed Judge Gilliam was. A great lawyer, not only learned in his profession, but remark able for his extensive information on a large variety of subjects.
