One effect of the recent outbreak in India must be to stimulate the study of Hindustani, not only amongst civilians and officers, but amongst all the residents in our Eastern territories, whether men or women, learned or unlearned. No one can say to what extent the horrors of the Indian mutiny might have been mitigated, had a knowledge of the idiom of the country been more general amongst our fellow countrymen.
