It needs no elaborate argument to prove that such powers claimed and exercised, would establish the clergy as a distinct class in the kingdom a class not liable to be brought into sym pathy with the people, for it exercised the full power of self perpetuation for it could admit whom it pleased into its ranks, and its ranks were open to none but such as were in full sympa thy with the leaders of class ambition.
