An Unionist Policy for Ireland (Classic Reprint)

Excerpt from An Unionist Policy for Ireland

Increasing reluctance to approve projects which, no matter what may be the design or the desires Of their authors, must of necessity tend to separation, to the demand of absolute independence, and probably to renewed and infinitely more serious con¿ict. But for the startling impression produced by them at the time of their full disclosure, it might have been possible to carry Mr. Gladstone's plans with a rush that chance has disappeared the verdict pronounced at the general election remains unshaken and if the same plans, or others nearly resembling them, were reproduced, unless all ordinary political indications are fallacious, the judgment of the constituencies would now be more emphatic than it was in 1886.
