The new entries last year were, therefore, more than acres in excess of the annual average for the past 10 years.The homestead laws retained their usual leadership. They accounted for almost 90 per cent of the areas in new segregations and more than 75 per cent of those patented.N O spectacular finds, of valuable ores were made, but the search for minerals continued along normal lines. Patents for 301 mineral entries were issued, as against 222 the year before. Satisfactory progress was made in the disposition of oil-shale cases.The additional sum of made available for protecting public lands and timber enabled the Office to materially reduce the field arrearages.
