Appendix to the Report of the Central Board of Health of Jamaica

Excerpt from Appendix to the Report of the Central Board of Health of Jamaica: Presented to the Legislature Under the Provisions of the 14th Vic., Chap. 60, and Printed by Order of the AssemblyIV. In Great Britain, the question of the importa tion of cholera as an epidemic, and of the practicabi ilty of preventing its introduction and spread by pro bibitory regulations, have been more attentively exa mined than in perhaps any other country, and the result of all the' enquiries has been a very general concurrence of opinion as to their entire inefficiency. The General Board of Health of England expressed their deliberate opinion on the subject in their report on quarantine, and in their first and second notifica tions issued in the autumn of 1848, and the Royal College of Physicians of London, embracing almost all the distinguished physicians in England, recorded about the same time, their sentiments in the following words Cholera appears to have been very rarely communicated by personal intercourse, and all at tempts to stay its progress by cordons or quarantine have failed. From these circumstances, the commit tee, without expressing any positive opinion with re spect to its contagious or non-contagious nature, agree in drawing this practical conclusion, that in a district where cholera prevails no appreciable ln~ crease of danger is incurred by ministering to persons affected with it, and no safety afforded to the, com munity by the isolation of the sick.To the soundness of this conclusion, the Central Board of Health would express their entire assent.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
