The political and social state of Hungary has been incidentally mentioned in several chapters, as the subjects to which they respectively relate have ren dered it expedient to do so, and in the one on In ternal Policy will be found a general outline of the existing constitution. Having studied it both in its theory and its practice, with an interest proportioned to its singularity, during a residence in the country for several months, at a period when the Diet was sitting, I regret that it has been impossible for me, in a work like the present, to render a full and just account of institutions so peculiar both in their structure and their bearings. If my health should allow me, I may possibly be tempted to submit here after to the public a separate essay on that distinct subject.
