Excerpt from Banks and Exchange Companies: A Letter to Alexander Blair, Esq., Treasurer of the Bank of Scotland, in Answer to the Prospectus Issued by the Proposed British Trust CompanyIt has been reported, and pretty generally believed, that this Company has been originated by the Bank of Scotland and the Royal Bank, in order to control, or put an end to, the business of the Exchange Companies, whose operations are viewed by the directors of these banks as prejudicial to the prosperity of these corpora tions, as well as of the public at large.I have found many of my own friends who actually believed the unfounded imputations contained in the Prospectus, and one of my most valued friends has written to me to inquire how I could engage myself and him in any concern which was liable to so serious an accusation, proceeding (as he believes) from the oldest and greatest banks in Scotland.
