Benighted Traveller

Hughes, Edward Francis

Benighted Traveller

Excerpt from Benighted Traveller: A Tale and Other Poems

It is a common thing, in these times, for the author of a volume of poetry to apologize for its publication, or else recommend it as possessing unrivalled excellence. The author of the present volume has no intention of doing either. He has no inclination to adopt the latter course, and he feels himself under no obligation to pursue the former. It is not a favour, but every one's right, provided he does no injustice or injury to others, to make known his thoughts in any form he may choose, and it is as much his right to print them as it is to speak them.

The aim of the author, in the following compositions, has been to profit rather than to please, though he might perhaps say, to profit as well as to please. Some of the pieces were among the earliest fruits of his attachment to the muses, and are to be regarded as expressions of feeling rather than of thought.
