Charles chauncey was born in New Haven on the 17th day of August, 1777, being the eldest son of Judge Charles Chauncey, LL.D., of New Haven, and grandson of Elihu and Mary (griswold) Chauncey, of Durham. His mother was Abigail, daughter of Thomas Darling (yale of New Haven. He was prepared for College at the Hopkins Grammar School under Jared Mansfield (yale and was admitted to Yale in 1787, at the age of ten years, but was kept back for a year longer, owing to his youth. As it was, his graduation at the early age of fifteen was almost unprecedented. His two broth ers were graduated here. In 1796 and 1806 respectively.

In 1793 he began the study of law in his father's office, and in I 795 he offered himself for examination for admis sion to the bar. His examination was successful, but his admission was perforce deferred until he had reached the legal age, in 1798.
