Brighton and Its Coaches

Excerpt from Brighton and Its Coaches: A History of the London and Brighton Road, With Some Account of the Provincial Coaches That Have Run From Brighton

Still, it were useless to shut one's eyes to the fact that the table or, more correctly speaking, the box seat talk is absent, nor can I say anything of coach ing of Old from personal experience, my earliest recollection of the Brighton road dating from about 1857, when, as a small boy, I was taken on Clark's Age, which ran through Kingston, Dorking, and Horsham. Somewhat earlier I had travelled on a white coach with green wheels, which ran, I think, between Dover and Ramsgate and these two journeys awoke in me a love for stage-coaching, which at the present time shows no signs of abatement, even though the road is not in many respects what it was, but I am one Of the many who have known nothing better.
