On its first appearance this book had a generous reception in theological circles. The small edition sold about equally in Great Britain, Canada and the United States of America, and though it has been for many years out of print, it seems to have been exerting a steady, if quiet, in¿uence. I still find the general argument satisfactory, but later researches having brought to my knowledge some limitations in its approach, I have filled the Space saved in revision by adding an 'epilogue' which goes some way towards remedying the deficiency.
