Many of these articles have been suggested by questions of Christian casuistry or church administration, or concerning Christian doctrine and experience - questions received by him in a very extensive correspondence. Over his profound legal and ecclesi astical knowledge, his keen insight into human nature, his kindly sympathy, his piety, his delicate sense of humor, and his inimitable style have combined to give these papers a somewhat unique place in current literature. They have now been gathered into a volume, partly in fulfilment of a purpose which he had in mind, and partly in response to the requests which have been coming for many years, and which have become urgent since his death.
