Cognitivescientistshavestatedtheassumptionthatthehumanmindhasmentalrepresentations[StanfordUniversity, 2004].Theserepresentationsarebrokendownintofive categories, concepts, logicalrepresentations, rules, analogies, andimages.Eachofthese mentalrepresentationscorrespondstodifferenttypesofmentalprocedures.Forexample, deductiveandinductiveproceduresareappliedtologicalrepresentationstoproduceinferences, retrieval, mapping, andadaptationareappliedtoanalogiestoproducebehaviours, andimagesareconstructedandmanipulatedtoproducebehaviours.Inthecaseof'concepts', theyareviewedassetsoftypicalfeaturesthatmatchtherealworld.Aprocedure likematchingisappliedtotheseconceptstoproducebehaviours.Conceptsarenotonly consideredassimpleideas(i.e.eachconceptisonlyasetoffeatures)butalsoapowerful platformforanysystemtocreateanunderstandingoftheworldaroundit.Comparing thehumanmindtoacomputer, thementalrepresentationsareanalogoustocomputerdata structuresandArtificialIntelligencehasattemptedtocreatemethodstoreflectthehuman behaviour/mentalprocedurethatoperatesonthesedata.
