Conduct and the Supernatural

Excerpt from Conduct and the Supernatural: Being the Norrisian Prize Essay, for the Year 1913

The original draft of this Essay was written with a view to the Cambridge Norrisian Prize. The subject chosen by those in authority was "Christian Ethical Ideals and Modern Reactions from Them." In preparing the book for publication it was found necessary to make some additions and to re-write and enlarge certain passages. The Essay remains, however, substantially the same. The writer has had a double purpose before him throughout: first, to examine and criticize certain ethical systems which illustrate the modern reaction against Christian ideals, and, secondly, to offer in apologetic form an argument for the supremacy of the Christian ethic.

Considerable attention has been paid to the writings of Friedrich Nietzsche and Mr. Houston Stewart Chamberlain, two of the prophets of modern Teutonic Kultur. The completed manuscript of this book, however, was in the hands of the publishers before the present war broke out, and I have thought it best to let it remain as it was. The bearing of current events upon what has been said in criticism of these and other writers will not be far to seek.
