Excerpt from Cranston: A Historical SketchCertain sketches of Cranston's history, among them the one con tained in the history of Providence County edited by Bayles, state that there were a number of movements looking toward a division of the town of Providence and the erection of new township in the western portion before the one which was finally successful in 1754. If this is the case, there is nothing in the state or town records bearing thereon, although as mentioned above Williams proposed in October of 1660 as a method of settling the territorial dispute which arose then a new pur chase from the original Indian owners and a new settlement in the dis triot in question, a plan which was rejected by the town of Providence. It was natural, however, that as the population of the western part of the town of Providence increased there should arise discussions of the, disadvantages of living remote from the place where the public bus' ness was transacted. Freeholders' meetings were held quarterly in the town of Providence, always in the compact portion at the head of the hay, and court was also held there. It is said that had the people in the westerly part of the town been able to agree upon a name for their proposed township they would have pressed their petition for a division of the old town long before they did. Some, however, insisted that a new town he formed under the name of Mashapaug, others wanted to take in part at Warwick and call it all Pawtuxet. Meshanticut and.Pocasset also had their supporters, and altogether the difficulty of a? Choice was serious enough to block action for nearly a century. In 1732' the supporters of a division came near success, but the name proved too much and action was again delayed.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
