Excerpt from Das Habichtsfräulein: Eine Dorfgeschichte Aus Dem Thüringer WaldRudolph baumbach was born, as he tells us in his auto biography, in Kranichfeld in Thuringia, Sept. 28th, 1840 (not, as is often stated, in 1841 or A few years after his birth his father was appointed court physician in Meiningen, and in that town the boy attended the Gym nasium, but he was, however, more interested in pressing wild-¿owers, stuffing birds and collecting insects than in the study of Latin and Greek. At the age of twenty he entered the University of Leipzig as a student of natural science. As is the custom in Germany, he did not continue at one place throughout his course, but went from one university to another, and finally, in Heidelberg, received the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. He then went to Vienna for more advanced study, but was soon forced to accept a. Position as teacher, first in Graz, later in Briinn and finally in Triest. Here he began his literary career by editing a little weekly which appeared under the title Enzian (the Gentian).
