While the majority of historians view Lloyd George's early career as merely a precursor to his successes at Westminster, this book asserts his status as the first modern Welsh nationalist. Campaigning fearlessly for Home Rule for Wales, official status for the Welsh language, and strong labor legislation, he became a career politician to further argue the cause of the Welsh national movement within Parliament. Also investigated are Lloyd George's Welsh perceptions of the major issues that dominated his time at Westminster (1908-1922) and how Welsh and Celtic values determined his actions.
