When a wave is incident upon an opaque object large compared to the incident wavelength a shadow is formed. Some radiation penetrates into the Shadow. The first quantitative analysis of this penetration effect for the case of a smooth object was that of G. N. Watson[i]. He showed that the field in the shadow of a sphere consists of a sum of modes.
