In the appendices I have embodied plans which I have used with great success in my classes, in both ancient and modern languages, during the past fifteen years.

Appendix I consists of lists of words and phrases for drill in vocabulary. Repetitions are not avoided 3 indeed, there might have been more, for once telling or learning is not enough for the most Of us.

Appendix II is made up Of conversations founded, as far as possible, on the text, and I hope they will be found real live ones, not the dead material in too many of our school-books. They ought to be useful to students, even without a teacher, and most students know that additional independent work counts for a good deal in every way.

Appendix I II. Consists of the more usual connected exercises. My hope is that teachers and students will find these appen dices suggestive for work and useful in preparation for the many examinations which bar the way to the goal Of their ambitions.
