Excerpt from Early Compotus Rolls of the Priory of WorcesterBut land-tenure is not the only subject which may be elucidated by these rolls, as will be seen. They give some glimpses of the many-sided life of a monastery and its dependents, and they furnish some interesting illustrations of contemporary history.A brief description of each roll is prefixed to its transcript, and an analysis, in the form of a modern balance sheet, is given of the account. Facsimiles are given of some of the rolls. For some reason they are distinctly easier to read in the facsimile than in the original, and of course the least faded, and most legible portions have been selected for reproduction. They scarcely convey an adequate notion of the labour spent in transcription. But a word or two may be said here about the rolls in general.They sometimes give the receipts in one column, and the expenses of the corresponding quarter in a parallel column. This is of interest because it is noted in the Introduction to the Abingdon Rolls that they are remarkable for being in double columns, only one other case being known to the Editor. This arrangement could not be conveniently reproduced in printing, and in this transcription the receipts are printed first, and the expenses afterwards.
